Product Review Action Unloaders bottom-reclaim unloaders are designed to remove dry material that is considered difficult to handle, such as dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS). “Our unloaders are used for material that is not as free flowing as grain,” said President John Farris. Action Unloaders began when Tank Connection Affiliate Group, Parsons, KS, purchased Starvac in March of 2008. Starvac, a French-based company, operated in Europe for 35 years with more than 4,000 unloader installations worldwide, Farris said. “We brought the company to the United States, but still maintain a presence in France,” Farris said. Product Features ranging in size from 12.5 inches in diameter to 20.5 inches. • A discharge rate of 100% from the unloader with no free flow. • A structural steel tunnel from one side of the silo to the other, allowing access for service and maintenance without emptying the tank. • The screw is cantilevered in the radius of the tank and sweeps at 360 degrees. • The gear box, suspended from the tunnel, is driven by an electric motor. • Applications include any biomass boiler feedstock, cellulosic ethanol feedstock, and DDGS. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced Dec. 22 up to $200 million over six years (FY 2009-FY 2014), to support the development of 5-12 pilot and demonstration-scale biorefineries. The projects are expected to support the Obama Administration’s comprehensive energy strategy of increasing the nation’s energy, economic, and national security by reducing the nation’s reliance on foreign oil, and also reducing greenhouse gases. While supporting deployment and increased biofuels usage, the DOE will continue to focus on research and development of advanced biofuels technologies. “This funding opportunity will look for the most promising technologies that can advance the potential of renewable biomass as a second generation transportation biofuels,” said John F. Mizroch, acting assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy. “The Department of Energy will select breakthrough integrated biorefinery projects that have technical and economic performance data at the bench or pilot scale to prove they are ready to move a step closer toward commerical readiness.” Topic Areas biorefinery development: • Pilot-scale, mininum throughput of one dry ton of feedstock per day with a mininum non-federal cost-share at 30%. • Demonstration-scale mininum of 50 dry tons of feedstock per day, with a minimum non-federal cost-share at 50%. Projects selected under this FOA wil provide operational data that reduces the risk associated with commercialization. The intent of this grant is to have integrated biorefinery projects at the pilot and demonstration scale levels operational within three to four years after applicants are selected.
