Biofuels Journal - January/February 2009 - (Page 30) Question and Answer Mary Beth Stanek Director of Environment and Energy Policy and Commercialization General Motors Mary Beth Stanek has been working at General Motors since 1982 and is currently the director of environment and energy policy and commercialization. Stanek is part of the GM’s push to create more flexible-fuel vehicles as well as the partnership with the National Governors Association (NGA) to have more states install E85 pump. Stanek talked with BioFuels Journal about the new NGA parternship, plans to increase flex-fuel vehicles (FFV), as well as explaining why GM is so involved. stations in the United States offering E85, which means there has been an approximate increase of 570 stations in one year. A Fuel Efficient Plan For us, it goes back to one basic thing: Ethanol is the most significant thing that we as a country can do in the near term to offset rising energy demands and reduce oil use. Even in a time when gasoline is relatively cheap, we need to do more to assure our nation’s energy security. Having alternative Stanek Close-Up Education: Stanek holds a Doctorate of business adminstration from the University of Sarasota, FL. Career: Stanek is responsible for planning and executing GM’s biofuels, electric, and fuel cell technology/vehicle demonstration and commercialization programs. She began her career at GM in 1982 and has had assignments in planning, purchasing, R&D, and public policy. Awards: Stanek was the 2002 recipient of the Wall Street Journal Achievement Award and is a member of the Academy of International Business. Hobbies: Stanek frequently contributes to MCB University Press. Her articles can be found in Management Decision, European Business Review, Journal of Workplace Learning and Management Research News. NGA 10-State Partnership We are excited about the partnership with the National Governors Association to work with the states on E85 pump expansion. The plan leverages the know-how that GM and others have developed in working with more than 300 stations in recent years to help add E85 availability. So we will run some of the same plans with the 10 states in the program — identifying high-traffic areas where a significant number of FFVs are located. The idea of the partnership is to develop long-term relationships that will take us to the next-generation of ethanol made from cellulose and biomass. In early October, the first biofuels corridor stretching 886 miles along Interstate 65 (I-65) from Gary, IN to Mobile, AL, opened with new E85 pumps installed in 31 gas stations. In the United States, there are 170,000 retail gas stations, but only 1,900 are equipped to sell E85. In January of 2008, there were 1,430 “For us, it goes back to one basic thing: Ethanol is the most significant thing that we as a country can do in the near term to offset rising energy demands and reduce oil use.” - Mary Beth Stanek, GM fuels that give consumers a choice is available and it makes sense regardless to the relative price of E85 and gasoline. We provide this choice at no additional cost to the consumer. GM Increasing FFV Line GM is increasing our FFV line in a 30 BFJ | JAN/FEB 09
