Biofuels Journal - January/February 2009 - (Page 46) Ohio Stressing Advanced Biofuels State Supporting Tech For Advanced Biofuels, Biopolymers Advanced biofuels soon will be a common household word in Ohio. The Buckeye State is investing in research into cellulosic ethanol from energy crops and forest products, as well as biodiesel from algae. At the same time, the state also is researching ways to convert its large polymer industry from petroleum feedstocks to biomass feedstocks. “Ohio’s future increasingly will focus on the next generation of Gov. Ted Strickland biofuels—biodiesel from algae and ethanol from energy crops, forest products, and cellulosic feedstocks,” said. Gov. Ted Strickland. “Ohio has the natural resources, transportation infrastructure, and industrial base to participate in this new biofuels era—an era that will target production on Ohio’s marginal soils and utilize systems with a smaller carbon footprint that utilize less water resources.” Strickland recently signed a $1.57 billion bipartisan job stimulus package, which includes $50 million in funding for the advanced energy industry and the newly-created Ohio Bioproducts Development Program. “In addition, the Advanced and Renewable Energy component of the jobs plan invests $150 million to create new jobs by making Ohio a powerhouse of renewable and advanced energy production,” Strickland said. Economic Troubles Ohio Facts Population: 11.466 million (July 1, 2007 estimate) Corn production: 541.5 million bushels of corn in 2007 % corn used in ethanol: At capacity, Ohio’s ethanol industry will use 182 million bushels or the equivalent of 33.6% of the 2007 corn crop. Cattle on Feed: 190,000 head in 2007 Governor: Ted Strickland, Democrat Lt. Governor: Lee Fisher, Democrat Ethanol Profile • 55 public E85 stations • A 1.6 cent-per-gallon tax credit is available for each gallon of ethanol-blended gasoline sold at the retail level. Ethanol Plant Profile • Seven ethanol plants in operation, with a total capacity of 514 MMGY Biodiesel Plant Profile • Six plants, with a production capacity of 60 MMGY Incentives • Alternative Fuel Transportation Grant Program—Provides grants of up to $40,000 for purchase and installation of E85 and B20 pumps. • B20 Biodiesel School Bus Grant Program— Up to $25,000 reimbursement to schools for incremental costs of using B20 instead of petroleum. Despite the state’s economic development incentives, recent news reports indicated that two Ohio ethanol plants are in financial trouble—Greater Ohio Ethanol, a 35-million-gallon-per-year (MMGY) plant in Lima filed for bankruptcy and sold for $5.75 million to Paladin Capital Group of Washington DC, and a plant owned by Altra Biofuels of California, Coshocton Ethanol plant in Coshocton (55 MMGY)—temporarily closed due to economic conditions.
