Additionally, we need a higher base blend of ethanol, because the industry is effectively capped at 10% of our fuel supply. Research is demonstrating that vehicles perform well with fuel containing more than 10% ethanol. The biggest trend in the ethanol industry: in business administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1993. My personal key to success: Increasing yields and optimization. According to projections by Monsanto and DuPont, we can almost double our corn production by 2030, without planting any more acres for corn than are currently being used. That will provide more corn for food and feed while meeting the demand for ethanol. What I predict for the ethanol industry in the next three years: My personel key to success lies in team building: selecting value-driven people who fit POET’s culture, identifying their untapped potential, and challenging them to become the best they can be. My biggest challenge: Cellulosic ethanol will emerge as a key component of ethanol’s challenge to fossil-based fuels. Also, corn oils will be used to produce plastics and other chemicals currently derived from fossil fuels. Who most influenced your career: Dealing with people who are not principle-centered and value-driven. I meet that challenge by: A wise man once told me to “Trust, but verify.” Key to the growth of the ethanol industry: I learned a great deal about challenging people to be the best they can be from a plant manager at Lozier, Bob Schrock. Bob would ask questions (even when he already knew the answers) and allow his team to determine the solutions.
