In 2004, Warne and General Manager James N. Guarino bought the company, and War ne was named president and CEO. War ne graduated fr om SUNY College at Oswego in 1979, with a bachelor of science degree in political science, and has worked in the hammer mill industry since 1991. transition resulting from several decades of manufacturing hammermills for the feed and grain and wood processing industries. The company entered the ethanol industry in the early 1990s. The cellulosic ethanol and biomass fuels marketplaces have been an even more natural progression, in that no other company produces more fine-grinding hammermills. While the market for the end product may have changed, the basic technology has remained the same. The University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign (UIUC), will be offering a master’s program in biofuels starting this fall. Dr. Hans Blaschek, Hans Blaschek director of the Center for Advanced BioEnergy Research (CABER/217-333-8224), said the program will be adminstered through CABER, which helps facilitate faculty activities in the areas of research, outreach, and education. “CABER also is offering the first new curriculum in bioenergy approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, a master’s level degree program,” Blaschek said. “The curriculum is tailored to provide students with flexibility, including both the policy and technical side,” he added. Enrollment already has begun for the fall semester, and individuals are encouraged to apply before April 15, 2009. CABER Background Complete Services Schutte-Buffalo hammermills can be found throughout the world in virtually all markets. Typical customers include those involved in food, pharmaceutical, mining, glass, and ceramic, agricultural, recycling, wood, animal feed, and dry chemical industries. We manufacture equipment in sizes ranging from laboratory scale to heavy duty industrial and quarrying models. Company History The 2001 merger of Schutte Pulverizer, Inc. and Buffalo Hammermill Corp. brought together two companies with a combined 150 years of size-reduction business. Historically, the two companies had served the feed and grain, wood waste reduction, and industrial marketplaces. Our primary equipment include more than 200 different hammermill styles and models as well as lumpbreakers, shredders, jaw and impact crushers, and other specialty equipment. In 2004, a management buyout of the company occurred when Guarino and myself purchased the company from Harry D. Schutte. Since this time, the company has expanded aggressively into emerging technologies including biofuels and e-waste recycling, in addition to several other specialty recycling markets. The Future of Company Since hammermill theory and technology has not changed dramatically over the years, Schutte-Buffalo Hammermill has built our reputation on the rugged dependability of our equipment, a large and readily available spare parts inventory and tremendous in-house engineering and technical experience. Schutte-Buffalo Hammermill continues growing to meet the needs of the future, adding the second addition to our facility in three years, to meet the needs of expanding production. Adam Tedder, associate editor CABER was formed two years ago to facilitate bioenergy-related activities, as they relate to research, teaching, and outreach. CABER recently has submitted a proposal to study the life cycle analysis and modeling of biofuel systems. The CABER Bioprocessing Research Laboratory (IBRL) received a grant of $3.2 million from the state of Illinois to build a pilot-level facility for scalable bench-level activities.
