EPA CHP Awards Ethanol Plants in IA, KS Recognized For Energy Savings East Kansas Agri-Energy, Garnett, KS and POET Biorefining-Ashton, IA were the recipients of the 2008 combined heat and power (CHP) Energy Star Awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The awards were presented at this year’s Fuel and Ethanol Workshop, in Nashville, TN on June 17 by EPA representative Beverly Banister. Banister said the plants are recipients of the Energy Star award for reducing energy consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “This Energy Star program recognizes projects that reduce emissions and use at least 5% less fuel than stateof-the-art, comparable, separate heat and power generation,” Banister said. “To apply, projects must be in commercial operation, operating within the stipulated emission limits, and have a minimum of 12 months and 5,000 hours of measured operating data,” she added. East Kansas Agri-Energy’s ethanol plant in Garnett, KS was recognized for its steam turbine which generates approximately one-third of the 35-million-gallon-per-year (MMGY) electrical energy. The steam turbine, which has been operated since the plant was built in 2005, also reduces carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 14,500 tons per year. That is equivalent, Banister said, to removing the annual emissions from 2,400 cars or planting 3,000 acres of forest. “It requires approximately 23% less fuel than typical on-site thermal generation and purchased electricity,” she continued. The second Energy Star Award BFJ | JULY/AUG 08 went to POET Biorefining-Ashton, IA for the POET plant that began production in April 2004. At the 56-MMGY Ashton plant, electricity is generated by a natural gas-fired turbine, which requires approximately 16% less fuel than typical on-site thermal generation and purchased electricity, Banister said. “Based on this comparison, the system reduced carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 18,900 tons per year, which is equivalent to removing the annual emissions from 3,100 cars or planting 3,900 acres of forest,” Banister said.
