Grain Journal - January/February 2009 - (Page 116) 2008 Crop Production 2008 CORN HARVEST SECOND HIGHEST PRODUCTION, YIELD EVER The U.S Department of Agriculture reported Jan. 12 in its Crop Production Summary Report that the 2008 corn harvest recorded the second best numbers ever for production and yield. Production was estimated at 12.1 billion bushels, down 7% from 2007’s record of 13.1 billion bushels. Yields were estimated at 153.9 bushels per acre (bpa) trailing only 2004’s record of 160.4 bpa but 3.2 bpa over the 2007 yield. Soybeans Soybean production totaled 2.96 billion bushels, an increase of 11% from 2007’s 2.59 billion bushels. It was the fourth largest production on record. The average yield per acre was estimated at 39.6 bushels, 2.1 bushels below the 2007 yield. Harvested acres was up 16% from 2007 to a record 74.6 millon acres. Sorghum Sorghum production was estimated at 472 million bushels, 5% below 2007. Planted area was estimated at 8.28 million acres, up 7% from 2007. Average grain yield—at 65 bpa— was down 8.2 bushels from last year. Rice Rice production was estimated at 204 million cwt., up 3% from 2007. The average yield was estimated at 6,846 pounds per acre, 373 pounds below the 2007 record yield of 7,219 pounds per acre. Wheat Wheat production was estimated at 2.499 billion bushels, up from 2.051 billion bushels in 2007. Yields were estimated at 44.9 bpa, up from 40.2 bpa in 2007.
