Grain Journal - July/August 2008 - (Page 145) Biofuels Degree KSU TO OFFER FOUR-YEAR PROGRAM With a shortage of accredited training programs for employees and managers in the rapidly growing biofuels industry, Kansas State University’s (KSU) Department of Grain Science and Industry has added a degree in biofuels production and management. According to Fred Fairchild, KSU professor of grain science and industry (785-532-4090), the impetus for the new degree Fred Fairchild option was due to the biofuels industry luring away employees from the feed and other grain-related industries. “We’d been training students for the feed industry for many years, but we were finding that many of them were being lured into the biofuels industry by extremely attractive salaries,” Fairchild said. “Now, with this new biofuels degree option, students can focus in for either the biofuels or feed industries,” he said. Four-Year Degree The new four-year degree program which begins in the fall 2008 semester, will include a six-month internship. The program, Fairchild explained, covers all the principles of processing grains, turning them into fuels, and finding uses for the co-products of the fermentation process. Students enrolled in KSU’s feed science and management program will have the option to focus their majors in either feed or biofuels production, he said. Students who complete the course will be prepared to operate and manage biofuels facilities.
