IAOM 2008 Milling Short Courses Introduction to Milling, Advanced Milling, and Mill Maintenance I The International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) will offer two milling short courses and a mill maintenance course this year. Introduction to Flour Milling: June 2-6 This course will be held at Kansas State University (KSU) in Manhattan. In addition to laboratory milling, students will have the opportunity to work in the new Hal Ross Flour Mill. Topics covered will include: principles of milling, milling practice, grain cleaning and conditioning, wheat and flour testing, grain structure, flow sheets, grain grading, grain and plant sanitation, and sieves and sifters. Enrollment is open until mid-May, with a limited class size. Cost is $1,800 for IAOM members and $1,950 for nonmembers. Advanced Flour Milling: June 23-27 This course will be held at KSU. Students will utilize KSU’s new Hal Ross Flour Mill for this course. A brief overview of the entire milling process will be presented, followed by a look at grain conditioning, the gradual reduction system, and quality measurements at various steps in the process. The course will emphasize analytical evaluation and impact of factors influencing the milling process, including development and analysis of granulation profiles and cumulative ash curves. Enrollment opens in March and is limited to 25 students. Cost is $1,800 for IAOM members and $1,950 for nonmembers. Mill Maintenance I: Mid-October This three-day course provides technical training in preventive maintenance; power transmission/bearings; sifter maintenance and flow; pneumatic systems; programmable controllers; work orders; and employee safety and sanitation as related to maintenance. IAOM’s Education Committee has begun work on the program/schedule, but a date has not yet been finalized. Tentatively, it will be held in mid-October in Kansas City, MO.
