IAOM Status Report EVP Melinda Farris discusses the association’s plans for the future. Melinda Farris was named executive vice president of the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) on Oct. 4, 2007. After six months of leading IAOM, she describes a very bright future for the organization. IAOM Status Report To a large extent, it is business as usual for the IAOM staff and board of directors. Committee reports. The year has already gotten off to a good start at IAOM with productive committee meetings in San Antonio, TX, held Jan. 16-18. The only standing committee still to meet is the Food Protection Committee, which is slated for a one-and-a-half day meeting in Gainesville, FL at the end of February. During the Texas meetings, a plan was outlined to finish revisions for units one, two, and three of the correspondence course in time for the committees to review them at their May meetings in Orlando, FL. This plan includes a working review session to be held in conjunction with the joint Central and Wheat State Districts’ spring meeting at the end of March in Manhattan, KS. The Education Committee has already started working on the schedule for the Melinda Farris, IAOM Executive Vice President Family: Husband, Bart Redford. Career: 1992-96: Customer service representative, Student Loan Marketing Service (Sallie Mae), Lawrence, KS. 1996-98: International programs director/ editor-in-chief, Tver InterContact Group, Tver, Russian Federation. 1998-2000: Field coordinator, International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), Moscow, Russian Federation. 2000-01: Senior Program Officer for Academic Programs, IREX, Moscow. 2001-04: Communications manager, American Chamber of Commerce in Russia (AmCham), Moscow. 2004-07: Director of Communications, IAOM, Leawood, KS. 2007: Named executive vice president, IAOM, Leawood. fall Mill Maintenance I Course, which will be held in Kansas City, MO. The Employee Relations Committee finalized questions for its wage survey, which will be mailed to members sometime this spring. The Environmental, Health and Safety Committee revamped the criteria for the IAOM Safety Award Program (see page 55), and, in doing so, it has raised the bar for the industry. Now award recipients will have to show a recordable injury/illness rate less than or equal to 2.65 during the previous year. Conference updates. We will also debut our new conference format in May at Orlando. With the new format, even some of the more familiar events and activities should have a new, fresh feel. The IAOM staff and board of directors has been working with the Latin America District on developing its program for its annual meeting in Orlando. We’ll also be working together with the Eurasia District to organize its third conference and expo in Bucharest, Romania, Oct. 19-21. Additionally, we will provide support to the Mideast & Africa District leaders as they plan for their annual conference in Arusha, Tanzania, Nov. 14-17. All of the other districts around North America are busy scheduling annual meetings for the fall, and starting to work on program agendas. As you can tell, there are a lot of projects under way, and we’re still looking at the possibility of holding meetings in those parts of the world that aren’t formally encompassed in an IAOM district to date. 16 First Quarter 2008 Response No. 161 MILLING JOURNAL http://www.vaaeng.com http://www.vaaeng.com
