IMEF Funds Put to Use The International Milling Education Foundation (IMEF) has set an ambitious goal to raise $3 million to support the development of IAOM programming ideas and educational tools for the industry (for more info. see page 69). Through the generous contributions of our members and a growing number of milling companies, the IMEF endowment total is near $200,000 today. By reaching this milestone of $200,000, IMEF is in a position where it can begin to fund some basic projects. A primary focus will be on completing the revision of the correspondence course—one of the staples of milling education around the world. The course has not been updated for several decades. With the endowment funds, we will be able to redouble our efforts to finish the revision in the near term. On May 15, we’ll have corporate culture expert Larry Johnson deliver an address on leadership. We’re expecting a great expo again this year, with a trade show floor full of booths and vendors. With all of the educational sessions held on the expo floor, everything will be convenient and at-hand. Since the venues are located on Universal Boulevard in Orlando, there will be plenty to do after conference events are over, with many attractions within walking distance. Spouse/guest program. Based on the feedback we received from last year’s spouse/ guest program participants, we’ve eliminated the group tours and replaced them with a hospitality suite where participants can meet and plan their outings for the day and have a place to relax when they need a break. Format change. The response toward the format change has been overwhelmingly positive. It seems that a lot of our members are excited about the educational tracks, as well as the fact that the conference has been condensed from three to two days. The expo will also have two distinct unopposed time periods—one on each day. While we are excited about the changes, we also understand that there “The IMEF endowment total is near $200,000 today. It is our hope that within the next decade, IMEF will have reached 50% of its $3 million goal.” We also plan to utilize IMEF resources to support a milling student from Kansas State University (KSU) to attend and present at the upcoming IAOM 2008 Conference & Expo in Orlando, FL. It is our hope that within the next decade, IMEF will have reached 50% of its $3 million goal and will be able to utilize a significant amount of the endowment funds for scholarships, translations of educational materials, and the development of other educational tools. 2008 Orlando Conference We are anticipating a great turnout for the upcoming conference and expo in Orlando (for more info. see p. 12-14). It is a great destination city; so, we expect large numbers of international members as well as a big percentage of our North American members. We have lined up an impressive list of keynote speakers as well. Jim Bair, vice president of the North American Millers’ Association (NAMA), will deliver a presentation on the changing face of agriculture at the IMEF Breakfast on May 14.
