A Unique Perspective Bunge’s vice president of milling looks at challenges facing the industry. Bunge North America promoted Todd Bastean to vice president and general manager of Bunge Milling in early December. Following his promotion, Bastean continued to serve as vice president and general manager of Bunge Biofuels. Therefore, he is uniquely qualified to share his insight on the interaction between the dry corn milling and biofuels industries. Milling Journal spoke with Bastean in early February to get his thoughts on some of the key issues facing the dry corn milling industry. Ethanol’s Impact The ethanol industry has impacted the corn dry milling industry in a num- Todd Bastean graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Western Illinois University in 1988. Out of college, he worked for KPMG, a Swiss-based audit/tax/advisory firm with offices in the United States. Bastean joined Bunge North America in 1992 as manager of internal audit. Since then, he has served in a number of roles, including director of strategic planning, chief administration officer for Bunge Milling, and chief administrative officer for Bunge Grain. He served as vice president and general manager of Bunge Biofuels before being named vice president and general manager of Bunge Milling in December 2007. Family and hobbies. The most apparent is as a competitor for corn, which has increased prices. Ethanol plants are also increasing the amount of distillers grains moving into the feed ingredient market. This is impacting various factors with our industry’s hominy feed market. Less visible today, but expected to have more impact in the future, are the varieties of corn planted. With the large demand for corn, driven by ethanol, there is an increasing need for improved yields. Higher yielding hybrids typically have a softer endosperm. The corn milling industry prefers hybrids with a hard endosperm. Despite these differences, we believe the strong relationships that our company has built with our farmer customers over the years will help ensure that Bunge has enough quality corn to continue to provide our customers with the products they want. Because of Bunge’s place in the middle of the food value chain, it is important for our company to communicate with farmers and customers about each others’ needs.
