Purifier valves can be altered under the purifier deck and at the end of some purifiers to send the amount, size, and quality of stock to alternative destinations in the mill during operation. Long term. In the long term, screen size, spouting destination, roll corrugations, speed, and differential can be changed with a larger investment of time and money. Changing the load off a particular sifter section during the run can be accomplished in a limited manner with stream splitting above multiple sifter boxes and changing the manner of grinding on the roll. Implementation of either step results in both a change in the amount of product being routed to a particular size screen. The flow sheet can assist in the evaluation of such a change before the change is implemented, thereby avoiding possible negative consequences. Developing a Flow Sheet There are at least several steps that most people would identify in the process of developing or updating a flow sheet for an existing process. These are suggestions that can be modified to suit your needs and interests and provide a basis for employee training. Layout. Complete an inspection of the process on a floor-by-floor basis. Draw the layout of each operating floor. Show one floor per page in a landscape orientation, with the same wall depicted along the top of the page. Cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west) should be identified on each page. Beams and consequently “bays” should be identified and referred to in an electronic spread sheet, with vertical columns denoted by letters of the alphabet (left to right, A, B, C ) and horizontal rows denoted by numbers (top to bottom, 1, 2, 3 ). Therefore, section A-1 will be located in the upper left corner of the building. Adding the equipment. On each floor, locate the equipment by placing a symbol resembling the equipment’s general shape and location. In the symbol, place an equipment number starting with “1” on each floor. Starting with one makes it easier to add pieces of equipment that may have been overlooked on the first pass through the operation. Show the process using the equipment. For example, a four-section sifter may have one section allocated to pre-break (Pre-BK) and three sections allocated to 1st break (1st BK). It may be helpful to take pictures of the equipment from various directions showing the inlet, outlet, and any ancillary system hookups such as compressed air, steam, or water. Include specifics. Make a table for each floor of the process, identifying equipment number, equipment name and manufacturer, equipment location, and location of any start/stop switch. For each piece of equipment, identify the bay and switch location such as column, wall, or on the equipment itself.
