If the process is automated, it may be useful to note valve and slide gate locations and type (especially if there are both manual valves and automated valves in the process), and valve and motor numbers. Having this information will make it easier to locate a valve that may be incorrectly positioned or a faulty motor. Break it down. Break large systems down into smaller more manageable units. For example, a cleaning house operation may be broken down into receiving, blending, cleaning, tempering, second tempering, and pre-mill processing. Identify the beginning and end of the system and use these unit definitions as a guide to what equipment is to be included in the flow sheet. Track the flow. Once the general layout is in place, it is time to follow the material from the beginning to the end of each sub-system. Use physical keys such as location or distance from walls, windows, beams, and columns, as well as pipe size, color, and ori- can only be measured when the operation is down and the equipment can be safely opened.
