Explosion Protection A guide to the technology to minimize damage from dust explosions This article is based on a presentation by Dr. John Going, senior advisor for explosion protection, Fike Corporation, Blue Springs, MO (816-229-3405). He spoke in May 2007 at the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) Technical Conference in Overland Park, KS. A number of standards deal with protection from dust explosions in grain-handling facilities, including An indoor flameless venting device, such as the one shown here, is designed to open in the event of an explosion, releasing pressure from the enclosure but preventing flame release. This particular vent is specifically designed for bucket elevators. flour mills and other types of grain processing plants. • NFPA 61 (from the National Fire Protection Association) is the overall governing standard for fire and explosion prevention in agricultural industries. • NFPA 654 covers dust explosion prevention in all industries. • NFPA 68 covers explosion venting, which is not a form of prevention but rather a way of ameliorating the effects of explosions once they occur. In grain handling facilities, it is recognized that explosions generally originate in equipment such as dust collectors, silos, conveyors, and grinders. Explosion venting can be incorporated into these types of equipment. • NFPA 69 covers other fire and explosion prevention systems. This standard was revised at the end of 2007. Determining Your Needs Deciding on explosion prevention or explosion venting devices is a two-step process. 1. Identify the potential hazards in your facility. What processes present the most risk of explosion? What substances fuel an explosion? Where does the necessary oxygen for rapid combustion come from? What are potential ignition sources? What are the characteristics of the explosion that could result? 2.
