New IAOM Safety Award Criteria Use this guide to see if your mill qualifies for an IAOM Safety Award. The International Association of Operative Millers’ (IAOM) Environmental, Health, and Safety Committee met Jan. 17 in San Antonio, TX and restructured the criteria for qualifying for its IAOM Safety Award. Previously, all companies without a lost-time accident within the calendar were eligible for the award. For the 2007 IAOM Safety Awards to be presented in May at the IAOM conference in Orlando, FL, the criteria will be based on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) annual job-related injuries/illness report (OSHA Form 300A). Milling companies will qualify for the safety award by calculating their Recordable Injury/Illness Rate using a new formula (see above). Companies that score equal to or less than 2.65 qualify for the award. Three Basic Steps There are three basic steps to calculating your company’s Recordable Injury/Illness Rate for the safety award. (1) Number of recordable injuries/illnesses (taken from OSHA Form 300A). (2) Number of hours worked by all em- ployees at the facility (taken from OSHA Form 300A). (3) Calculate your Recordable Injury/ Illness Rate by using IAOM’s new safety award formula (see above). How to Calculate Your Injury/Illness Rate To calculate your facility’s Recordable Injury/Illness rate, multiply the number of recordable injury/illnesses by 200,000 (a constant). Then divide that number by the total number of hours worked that year to get your score. If your score is equal to or less than 2.65, you qualify for an IAOM Safety Award. Don’t Forget OSHA Form 300A IAOM’s new safety award criteria utilizes OSHA Form 300A. Every year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to post a summary of the total number of job-related injuries/ illnesses that occurred over the previous year. From Feb. 1 to April 30, employers are required to post the summary, OSHA Form 300A—not the OSHA 300 Log. This report is the first component in determining if your company is eligible for an IAOM Safety Award (see above). Contents The summary must list the total number of job-related injuries/illnesses that occurred in the past year and were recorded in the OSHA 300 Log. Companies with no recordable injuries/illnesses in the previous year must post the form with zeros on the total line. The form must be certified by a company executive. Additional requirements. Employment information about annual average number of employees and total hours worked during the calendar year is also required to assist in calculating incidence rates. The total number of hours worked is the second component in determining if your company is eligible for an IAOM Safety Award. The total number of hours worked only includes the hours worked or spent on the job, as opposed to the number of hours paid. If for any reason a person works eight hours and is actually paid for 10 hours of work, only count the eight hours the person was on the job. In addition, vacation and holiday pay are not counted as hours worked. In the case of management, employees working at a particular facility who are paid a base salary without any overtime pay, their hours may be estimated based on the average number of hours normally worked in any given week. Report Availability The form is to be displayed in a common area, wherever notices to employees are usually posted.
