Global Fight Against Wheat Killer Major wheat producing countries conference to prevent and control Ug99. A group of 31 wheat-producing countries meeting in New Delhi, India in November pledged strong support to combat a virulent strain of wheat stem rust threatening wheat and barley crops worldwide Named Ug99 after its discovery in Uganda in 1999, the disease has spread from East Africa to Yemen, Sudan, and in late 2007, to Iran. Currently, there is no evidence that the disease has spread to any other country, and a Cornell University survey found no Ug99 in India, Pakistan, Egypt, or China. International Threat However, an estimated 80% of all wheat varieties grown in Asia and Africa are susceptible to the disease, said scientists participating in the New Delhi conference. The last major outbreak of wheat stem rust in North America in the 1950s affected spring wheat varieties grown in the United States and Canada and wiped out roughly 40% of the crop. Prevention Control Efforts Participants adopted a declaration pledge to support prevention and control efforts as a matter of national policy and international cooperation. Among the steps to be taken: • Development of contingency plans to fight outbreaks. • Sharing of surveillance information and creation of a global early-warning system. An example of wheat stem rust provdied by Erick DeWolf, Kansas State University. • Plant breeding research to develop wheat varieties resistant to Ug99. • Distribution of quality seeds of wheat rust-resistant varieties to needy farming communities. Sponsors of the New Delhi conference included the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the government of India, and the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative.
