IAOM Considers New Asia District Global Strategies Committee plans for broader membership The Global Strategies Committee of the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) outlined three goals for the association when they met during the 112th Conference and Expo in Orlando, FL May 15. The goals of the committee are to: • Grow international membership. • Grow global leadership. • Foster global interaction. New Committee Chair Keith Horton, 2007-08 IAOM president, presided over the meeting of the committee in the absence of a chairperson. That situation was quickly rectified, however, as Ashok Sarkar, a researcher with the Canadian International Grains Institute, Winnipeg, MB, was nominated, in absentia, to be chair. Asia District Horton reported that the committee has been considering the establishment of an Asia District to serve operative millers in that region. Horton addressed the need to find leaders in the region who would help start the district. Horton said an organizational meeting could be held in Asia in 2009, with a district meeting possibly in 2010. Membership During a discussion of membership recruitment, several committee members said that one-year memberships in IAOM are a problem, because they are too short a term. Members in the Mideast and Africa said they deal with this by including a oneyear IAOM membership in the cost of registration for district meetings. Committee members said focusing district meetings on commercial matters, rather than technical issues, perhaps could make district meetings more attractive to millers. “District meetings are free to focus on any issues that are important to that district or region,” said IAOM Executive Vice President Melinda Farris.
