Milling Journal - Q2 2008 - (Page 20) NAMA’s 2008 Division Meetings Millers convened for an update on NAMA’s various activities. Although wheat prices were at record highs when milling industry executives met March 15-18 at the 2008 North American Millers’ Association’s (NAMA) Division Meetings in Palm Coast, FL, most were smiling. Whether it was a golf outing with an ocean view or the promise of a near-record spring wheat harvest, soaring wheat prices didn’t damper the attendees spirits. Although each of NAMA’s three divisions heard cutting-edge presentations, the projection of a 54% larger soft red winter wheat harvest stole the show (see report on p. 48). Corn Division Mary Thompson, Cargill Corn Milling, Wayzata, MN, was elected division chairwoman. Thompson is the first woman to be elected chair of a NAMA Division (see interview on page 22). Thompson replaces outgoing Chairman Roger Mortenson, House-Autry Mills Inc., Four Oaks, NC. In other news, Judi Adams, president of the Grain Foods Foundation, announced that Purdue University’s Dr. Mario Ferruzzi has completed his research on the bioaccessability of carotenoids in yellow corn products. The Grain Foods Foundation will now begin working with Purdue to present the findings to consumers. Oat Division Dan Ward, La Crosse Milling Company, Cochrane, WI, was elected division chairman. He replaces outgoing Chairman A. Bruce Roskens, PepsiCo/ Quaker Oats, Chicago, IL. Randy Strychar, president of Ag Commodity Research, discussed the outlook for the 2008 oat crop. In short, he said 2008 production will meet demand, with very little remaining stocks. Bill Wilton, president of the Prairie Oat Growers Association (POGA), spoke about oat growing in Manitoba. He mentioned that price increases in fertilizer and fuel are raising the input costs for oat farmers dramatically.
