Born: July 27, 1977, Smith Center, KS. Education: 2000: Bachelors of science, milling science, Kansas State University, Manhattan.. Career: 2001-06: Miller, American Italian Pasta Co. Columbia, SC. 2006-07: Head miller, American Italian Pasta Co. 2007-08: Head miller, North Dakota Mill & Elevator, a 33,000 cwts. per day flour mill in Grand Forks, ND. I got into milling because: “I grew up on a farm in Kansas raising cattle, wheat, grain sorghum, sunflowers, plus other crops and became interested in what happens with wheat and other grains after they are delivered to the local elevator.” I view milling: “As both an art and a technological process. As a mill, we blend our wheat out of multiple silos, staging it up in front of the mills to try to achieve a consistent blend. But we don’t know how the wheat will behave on the mill until it is actually running. As a miller, you see how the wheat is performing and adapt your set-up to the wheat to maximize performance, calling on past experience or trying something totally new, to achieve the desired finished product.” Personal key to success: “Come to work every day. Do your best. Hopefully, leave things better than when you arrived.” Biggest challenge: “Promoting the ‘work smarter, not harder’ mentality.” Best maintenance idea: “Listen to the operators and figure out ways to make the process easier for them.” I feel proud: “When I see consumer products that include my company’s flour. I feel a sense of accomplishment, because I know what went into producing that product.” If I wasn’t in the milling industry, I would be: “Farming in Kansas.” Hobbies: “Spending time outdoors with family, hunting, and fishing.” Response No. 311 MILLING JOURNAL Second Quarter 2008 31 http://www.cetec.org http://www.cetec.org
