Milling Journal - Q2 2008 - (Page 42) Riviana Foods Grows in Memphis Rice company seeks economic scale. Riviana Foods Inc. is building a new rice processing and packaging plant with a warehouse and distribution center in Memphis, TN. The project is scheduled for completion in 2010. Ground was broken in February for the 400,000-squarefoot facility on a 31acre site. The new facility will employ 300 people and is adjacent to Riviana’s existing plant. “This state-of-the-art facility will allow us to reduce our cost for processing, packaging, storage and distribution and will provide important economies of scale,” said de Zeeuw. “It also represents Riviana’s renewed commitment to the Memphis community,” he said. In 2006, the Memphis and Shelby County Industrial Development Board granted Riviana a 12-year payment-inlieu-of-taxes (PILOT) agreement that helped the company’s investment and development of the project. Consolidation Upon completion of the new facility, Riviana will consolidate operations from its Houston Instant and Packaging plants, warehouse, and technical center to Memphis. The consolidation will include Success® and Minute®, the company’s first line instant rice brands, as well as private label instant rice volumes. Houston, TX-based Riviana Foods has been processing and marketing consumer rice products since 1911. According to Zeeuw, the company leads the branded retail rice market with 22% of all retail rice sales volumes.
