Milling Journal - Q2 2008 - (Page 50) 1st Quarter Milling Production Wheat flour cwts. higher in first-quarter 2008 than a year earlier Flour milling companies started the 2008 milling year with a first quarter rise in the amount of wheat flour produced compared to a year earlier while daily capacity reached an all-time high. The first quarter 2008 production of wheat flour was 102,751,000 cwt., about 2,500,000 cwt. higher than first-quarter 2007. A strong production number in the first quarter indicates that a new annual production record could be in the cards. In 2001, milling companies produced a record total of 404,521,000 cwts. Rye flour milling increased to 716,000 cwt. in the first quarter compared to 691.000 cwt. in the same quarter of 2007. Durum wheat ground in the first quarter was 18,213,000 cwt., down slightly from the 18,921.000 cwt. ground in the same quarter a year ago. Daily Capacity Daily (24-hour) wheat flour capacity was 1,539,000 cwt. in the first quarter, up marginally from 1,529,000 cwt. in the first quarter of 2007. The daily capacity in the quarter, however, was larger that in any quarter on record. Kansas led all states with a daily capacity of 147,130 cwt. sacks and a first quarter wheat flour production total of 8,040,000 cwt. Frank Zaworski, editor First quater 2008 flour production indicates that the milling industry in the United States could be on the way to a new annual record. 50 Second Quarter 2008 MILLING JOURNAL
