Milling Journal - Q3 2008 - (Page 12) Ted Korolchuk: Miller of the Year Milling innovator joins distinctive list of winners Theodore “Ted” Korolchuk, director of milling, ConAgra Flour Milling, Omaha, NE, was named the 2008 Milling Operative of the Year May 15 during the annual conference of the International Association of Operative Millers in Orlando, FL. The award is presented annually by Milling & Baking News to recognize an active milling operative who has made the most significant contributions to the progress of his/her plant, the company, and the industry from an operating point of view. Korolchuk, a 1979 graduate of Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, with a degree in milling science and management, joined ConAgra that year shortly after graduation. During his nearly 30-year career with ConAgra(1979-2008), Korolchuk moved from being head miller to regional technical miller His achievements include, among many other projects, helping restart mills in Chester and Alton, IL, following the floods in 1993, and rebuilding ConAgra’s mill in Commerce City, CO. Recently, Korolchuk’s passion for innovation was instrumental in the development of ConAgra’s Ultrafine whole grain flour. In his nomination letter for Korolchuk, Paul Maass, president and general manager, ConAgra Mills, said, “The introduction of fine whole grain flour that delivers taste and texture similar to refined flour has provided a foundation for the milling and baking industries’ turnaround in demand.” He is currently excited about ConAgra’s 8,000 cwt/day mill expansion in Saginaw, TX, that will increase the daily milling capacity to 14,000 cwt. “It is a beautiful facility and we have begun producing product,” he says. Korolchuk and his team helped design the mill with the assistance of Buhler Inc. The Best Community Korolchuk tells Milling Journal, “It means a great deal to me to have been nominated for this award by my friends and colleagues. I have always felt that millers, and others working in the industry, represent the best community of professionals you will find anywhere. “In being named Milling Operative of the Year, I am in the company of men whom I have always admired and respected. I am truly honored.” Ted and his wife Claire reside in the Omaha area and are the parents of three children: Ted, 27; Brynn, 25; and Elizabeth, 21. “I am fortunate to work for ConAgra Mills,” Korolchuk says.
