Horizon to Close Mill in Ontario Port Colborne 13,200 cwt. mill to cease operation Oct. 30 Horizon Milling G.P. announced July 2 that it will cease operations at its Port Colborne, ON, flour mill on Oct. 30, 2008. The Port Colborne mill, built in 1940, was purchased by Horizon Mills in 2006 from Smucker Foods of Canada. The mill has 60 full-time employees and a capacity of 13,200 cwts. per day, according to Lori Fligge, spokesperson for Horizon Milling, Minneapolis, MN. Company officials met with Port Colborne salaried employees and UFCW Local 416P union representatives July 1. "In our early discussions with the union in 2006, the business model we presented was our best plan to ensure the Port Colborne facility's stability and growth,” said John Holliday, vice president and general manager, Horizon Milling. Landscape Changed Since that time, the economic landscape has changed considerably, and recent business conditions have eroded the model we were hoping could keep this facility viable to the benefit of all stakeholders, Holliday said. "This was a difficult decision to make, and we want to express our appreciation to this facility's employees for their good work over the years," said Holliday. "We are working closely with employees to provide transition support." According to Holliday, Horizon will continue to operate a 16,600-cwt.-per-day wheat flour mill in Montreal, QC; a 14,000-cwt.-per-day mill in Saskatoon, SK; and other processing facilities in Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. Horizon Milling G.P. is the Canadian division of Horizon Milling, LLC, apartnership between Cargill, Inc., and CHS Inc. formed in 2006 Horizon Milling G.P. has total wheat flour milling capacity of 43,700 cwts., and total durum flour milling capacity of 7,500 cwts.
