Milling Journal - Q4 2008 - (Page 33) Urban Wheat Field Experience The Big Apple learns the life cycle of wheat. On Oct. 6-8, the Wheat Foods Council sponsored a live wheat field exhibit—called the Urban Wheat Field— in New York City’s South Street Seaport area. The approximately one-quarteracre-size exhibit included a live wheat field, full-size combine, functioning mill, bread-baking stations, nutrition lab, and more. To create the field, nearly 500,000 wheat kernels were planted in 300 4-footby-4-foot pallets. The interlocking pallets created the wheat field, with a pedestrian path running through it. Nearly 8,000 people visited the field, consuming approximately 500 loaves of fresh-baked bread and 4,000 cookies. Established experts in the areas of wheat agriculture, milling, baking, and nutrition guided vistors through each phase of the grain’s life cycle.
