Milling Journal - Q4 2008 - (Page 58) North Country Farms, LLC Ag venture formed for milling wheat for Northern New York. In early October, Seaway Valley Capital Corp., a diversified holdings company, joined with Fields as Factories, LLC and Golden Technology Ventures to form North Country Farms, LLC. The new company will pursue valueadded agricultural production, processing, and marketing ventures with an initial focus on flour production from wheat harvested in northern upstate New York. The company is building a new mill at the site of a former bakery just outside the city limits of Watertown, NY. Fields as Factories, LLC is a diversified agricultural business based near Sackets Harbor, NY, and Golden Technology Ventures is a venture capital company focusing on value-added production and processing technologies. According to the new mill's plant manager, Kevin Richardson, North Country Farms initially will focus on milling wheat from local crops, in an effort to create value in a market defined by volatile crop, food, and transportation costs. “We believe that highly concentrated crop and food processing operations located long distances from end markets created the opportunity for North Country Farms to capitalize on well defined supply chain opportunities,” he explained. Watertown “We feel a meaningful distributed food production opportunity currently exists in northern New York with respect to wheat and flour," Richardson added, "and we are exploring other opportunities as well.” At full capacity, the flour mill will grind approximately 85,000 bushels of wheat annually producing approximately 4 million pounds of white and whole wheat flour and over 1 million pounds of wheat midds.
