In the 1960’s, with the notable exception of maize, most of the varieties were populations or pure lines often called open pollinated varieties (OP). Today, there is a long list of hybrid commercialized crops such as sunflower, sorghum, oilseed rape, rye, barley, rice and several vegetables. Expanding International Trade International seed trade is not new. In 1924, when the International Seed Trade Federation was formed, there was sufficient trade to justify an international organization to facilitate seed movement between nations. However, the percentage of export/ import was low compared to domestic markets and each country—with few exceptions—was able to produce its own seeds. This has changed during the past three decades for several reasons: • Development of fast and cheap transportation. • Regional specialization in the production of hybrids. • The speeding of breeding and commercialization processes which has led to the development of counter-season production.
