Triple-Stack Cotton in Monsanto’s Pipeline Monsanto is working with glufosinatetolerant traits in its cotton technology programs to pave the way for the development of the industry’s first three-way stack including Roundup Ready Flex, dicamba-tolerance and glufosinate tolerance. The glufosinate trait is under license from Bayer CropScience. “Our research and development programs are focused on developing technologies, both through in-house discovery and through licensing, that can offer benefits to cotton producers,” says Rich Voth, Monsanto’s market development manager on the project. “By adding glufosinate tolerance to our pipeline, we will be working with traits for three different active ingredients and a series of technologies that can broaden the modes of action available to producers,” Voth says. 98. Blue Roses for My Lady The Japanese company that created the world’s first genetically modified blue roses says it will start selling them in 2009. Suntory Ltd., also a major whisky distiller, hopes to sell several hundred thousand blue roses a year, says company spokesman Kazumasa Nishizaki. The exact price and commercial name for the blue rose have not been decided. Fourth Quarter Federal Seed Act Violations Three seed companies from New York, Ohio and Oklahoma paid a total of $4,700 to settle alleged violations of the Federal Seed Act during the fourth quarter of 2007. For the entire year, 10 companies paid a total of $30,150 to settle alleged violations. Fees in 2007 ranged from $1,400 to $8,100. During 2006, a total of 21 alleged violations resulted in collection of $69,400. Fees in 2006 ranged from $875 to $28,325. Payments to settle alleged violations of the Federal Seed Act are calculated by a set formula that takes into account several factors including the company’s prior violations and specific details relating to each case. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) administers the act with the help of state seed officials. State seed regulatory officials cooperate with AMS in making the investigations. The Federal Seed Act is a truth-inlabeling law designed to protect farmers and consumers who buy seed. Collections made by the USDA are deposited into the government’s general fund maintained at the Federal Treasury. Brazil Approves GM Corn Brazil’s National Biosecurity Council on February 12 authorized the planting and sale of Monsanto’s MON 810 Bt corn. Science and Technology Minister Sergio Rezende says the decision by the 11 cabinet ministers making up the council “is the first approval for genetically modified corn in Brazil.” Former USDA Secretary Dies Earl Butz, former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, died February 2 in his son’s home in Washington, DC.
