The technology provides effective control of important corn pests by incorporating into the plant the cry1F gene, originated from Bacillus thuringiensis microorganism. HERCULEX I protects the corn plant against the Spodoptora frugiperda caterpillar, the main corn pest in Brazil. This protection is extended to the entire life cycle of the plant. It also allows the control of Diatraea saccharalis. Depending upon growing conditions, these pests may cause yield losses of more than 40 percent. Monsanto Seeks FDA Approval for Drought-Tolerant Corn Monsanto in January filed for U.S. regulatory approval for drought-tolerant corn. Monsanto says it submitted its product to the U.S. FDA for regulatory clearance. It is working with Germanbased BASF on the project. Monsanto says its firstgeneration drought-tolerant corn is in the final phase of development and should be launched early in the next decade. The corn is designed to provide yield stability during periods when water supply is scarce by mitigating the effects of water stress within a corn plant. U.S. field trials conducted last year met or exceeded the 6-10 percent targeted yield enhancement, equal to about 7-10 bushels per acre, over the average yield of 70-130 bushels per acre, Monsanto said. AVICTA Seed Treatment Nematicide Receives Registration for Corn AVICTA® brand seed treatment nematicide from Syngenta Seed Care received EPA approval in January for use on corn. Syngenta Seed Care will offer the new AVICTA brand seed treatment nematicide in combination with an enhanced rate of Cruiser® seed treatment insecticide and Apron XL®, Maxim® XL and Dynasty® to provide early-season protection against nematodes, insects and diseases. AVICTA brand nematicide will be widely demonstrated in cooperation with seed companies in the form of large plot, on-farm plantings during the 2009 planting season, and will be launched commercially in 2010. EU Approves RR2 Yield Soybean for Import The European Union in December authorized imports of Monsanto’s Roundup RReady2 Yield (MON 89788) soybeans for import and sale in its 27 member states for the next 10 years. Production of MON 89788 was not included in the Commission’s approval. The EU produces a minimal amount of soybeans in terms of overall EU consumption, so imports are crucial. Soybean meal is the primary source of protein for the EU animal feed market, representing more than 60 percent of vegetable protein. Response No. 391
