Seed Today - Q2 2008 - (Page 17) Hungarian Seed Industry Well suited to corn and wheat seed production The Hungarian seed production industry has a long history of organized seed laws and harmonized seed regulations with surrounding nations. “Hungary was one of the first European nations to develop laws to govern the seed industry in a effort to assure consistent, high quality seed for its customers,” says Szabolcs Ruthner, director of the Hungarian Seed Association in Budapest. “Hungary’s first seed laws were passed in 1986. Hungary was a founding member of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) in 1924 and of the International Seed Federation (FIS), also in 1924.” The Hungarian Seed Association (HSA) was formed in 1993. Over 800 seed-related businesses are now registered with the HSA. One-fourth of them are engaged mainly in contract multiplication. seed produced in Hungary is exported. Corn and Sunflowers Growing conditions in Hungary favor seed production. Climate and soils are both suited to seed production. There is an ample supply of water for irrigation. More than 90 percent of Hungary’s seed corn production is irrigated. Corn and wheat each account for approximately 30 percent of Hungary’s total planted acres. Sunflower add seven percent. The balance is planted to numerous other crops. Soybeans are virtually absent from the landscape. Seed production and distribution is fully privatized after being entirely controlled by the state prior to 1989. Hungarian seed laws are fully harmonized with the European Union (EU) seed directives. Hungary became a member of the EU in 2004.
