2008 AOSA/SCST Annual Meeting: An Ovation to Mutual Purpose Spring is a time of anticipation and enthusiasm as winter ends and the new growing season begins. In the past, seed technologists experienced a slow period during the spring, punctuated with inventory or carry over testing and a busy season once the new crop was harvested in the fall. Today the U.S. seed industry is global in nature and the international production and sale of seed has altered the traditional seed laboratory schedule. Most of us are busy year round with seasonal variation provided by phases of extreme busyness. to give these analysts a voice in affairs pertaining to their line of work. The purpose of SCST was to represent these analysts, to increase the degree of uniformity of test results, to promote and maintain the highest standards of membership and to act as a liaison between AOSA and the American Seed Trade Association. Working for Improved Seed Quality Since 1922, AOSA and SCST have held combined annual meetings and worked together to improve seed testing and serve the needs of the seed industry. The importance of the relationship between AOSA and SCST was once described as: “each organization’s effort is to be applauded, but one cannot do much clapping with only one hand.” One hundred years later, we can look back on the founding ideals of our associations and find these goals as relevant and profound today as they were originally. The work of improving seed testing will never be completed, but it can continually be improved. This June we will meet in St. Paul to celebrate the history and accomplishments of AOSA. Our technical committees will present their activities for the year and make plans for the coming year. Progressive research will be presented during the Research Symposium and regional referee projects will be discussed and planned. The Seed Issues Forum and Poster Session will provide an informal, intimate environment for the exchange of information, ideas and seed testing innovation. The 2008 AOSA Rule change proposals will be discussed during an open meeting and voted on during the joint annual business meeting. Three workshops are planned prior to the meeting to provide additional educational opportunities. During this busy and exciting annual meeting there will be a continual, if silent, ovation: the sound of AOSA and SCST coming together to improve and progress the science of seed testing. Anita Hall SCST Executive Director scst@twcny.rr.com www.seedtechnology.net Dr. Brent Turnipseed, RST AOSA President www.aosaseed.com AOSA Celebrates 100th Anniversary This spring, the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) and Society of Commercial Seed Analysts (SCST) are putting the finishing touches on preparations for our annual meeting June 8 11 in St. Paul, MN hosted by the Seed Analysts of the Midwest in downtown St. Paul. The outstanding program for this meeting offers many venues for the exchange of information, the presentation of research and the discussion of association business. The agenda and meeting information are available online and we expect an excellent turnout. The 2008 meeting also marks the 100th anniversary of the Association of Official Seed Analysts. In 1908, the USDA convened a meeting of workers in agricultural experiment stations and agricultural colleges in Washington, DC. Representatives from 16 states, the USDA and the Department of Agriculture in Canada, all officially interested in seed testing, met and formed The Association of Official Seed Analysts of North America. The object of the Association was “the perfecting and promulgation of uniform methods for seed testing.” The AOSA’s 1910 constitution states two purposes: 1) to secure uniformity in and accuracy in methods, results and reports; 2) to provide opportunities for discussions of matters of interest to seed analysts. SCST Organized in 1922 Membership in AOSA was limited to analysts from state and federal government laboratories in the United States and Canada.
