Seed Today - Q2 2008 - (Page 56) Improved Bahiagrass New USDA/UGA variety germinates faster, grows taller and yields more taller and yields more dry matter than Tifton 9, another popular USDA/UGA bahiagrass variety. “TifQuik was developed to have reduced hard seed and thus faster germination and field establishment,” says USDA research geneticist Bill Anderson, Ph.D. “These features mean that a TifQuikseeded pasture will be covered earlier, and grazing or hay removal can be performed sooner with higher initial yields.” In the greenhouse, five times more TifQuik germinated after six days than Tifton 9. In the field, TifQuik emerged about 75 percent faster after one week. After four weeks, TifQuik plants were taller than both Tifton 9 and Pensacola, another popular bahiagrass variety. Dry-matter yields of TifQuik were two times higher than Tifton 9 for the first cutting two months after planting. Four Selection Cycles In developing TifQuik, the sole criterion for selection of plants was fast germination. It took four years to achieve the desired qualities, Anderson says. Four selection cycles were performed beginning with Tifton 9. During each cycle, enough seed was planted from the previous one to obtain 1,000 seedlings that germinated within the first week. Plants were allowed to cross-pollinate. The four cycles were completed in 2002. The seed from 2002 was used to establish greenhouse germination tests plus a replicated field test and to begin seed increase.
