Seed Today - Q2 2008 - (Page 60) European Opinions Toward GMOs GMOs not a major environmental worry, but GMO use is still not in favor From an environmental perspective, how do Europeans view transgenic agricultural seeds? According to the March, 2008 report by the European Union’s Directorate General Environment, climate change and pollution are of much greater concern than biotech seeds. The report is a summary of 26,730 public opinion interviews conducted in late 2007 in all 27 EU member states for The Special Eurobarometer 295, “Attitudes of European Citizens Towards the Environment.” According to the survey, most Europeans are more worried of environmental issues than they are of GM seeds. Only 20 percent of the survey participants, down from 24 percent in 2004, selected biotech seeds as a worrisome issue. The most worrisome environmental issue is climate change. This issue was selected by 57 percent of the participants, up from 45 percent in 2004. The two issues about which participants indicate they are most uninformed —chemicals in everyday products and the use of biotech seeds—are “scientific” issues. The Directorate says this makes these issues harder for the public to understand. Taking a closer look at the link between concerns about the use of GMOs in farming and lack of information about them, the report says that those who are most uninformed are significantly more concerned about the biotech seeds than those who say they are well informed. Using GM Products Later in the survey, when participants were questioned about whether or not they favor the use of biotech seeds, a different picture emerges. The survey indicates that the absolute majority of Europeans declare they are opposed to the use of biotech products. This is particularly the case in Slovenia and Cyprus. Around a fifth (21 percent) supports their use. Nine percent say they have never heard of GM seed. Respondents in Malta, Portugal and Spain hold more neutral opinions about GM crops.
