Lowry Executive Vice President Idaho Crop Improvement Association (ICIA) Meridian, ID • 208-884-8225 Years with ICIA: 25 Years in seed industry: 30 Family: Wife Betty, three sons and one grandchild. Education: B.S., University of Missouri; M.A., Washington University, St. Louis. Career summary: Involved in all aspects of seed certification since 1978, including six years as the Executive Vice President of AOSCA. Most meaningful professional experience: Being part of the leadership team of AOSCA that devised and developed the restructuring of the Association in its current form. This change has helped bring AOSCA forward and provided meaningful opportunities for the seed industry in general. Biggest management challenge: When I first came to Idaho we reworked many aspects of the program while also overcoming legal issues with potatoes. Those years taught me a great deal and resulted in a strong certification program for Idaho. The efforts of many good board members and a strong seed industry provided a great base from which to work. Personal key to success: Like everyone else, I like to receive credit for what I do. However, many years ago I heard a quote that I try to abide by: “You can accomplish anything as long as you do not care who gets the credit.” This thought is always with me. Key to ICIA’s success: Very involved board members who are willing to listen to new ideas and act according to a plan rather than just react to situations. We also have a very well qualified and dedicated staff. On dealing with people: Give people freedom to succeed or fail in their efforts. Then be there to congratulate them or console them and figure out what to do next. You simply have to initially trust people and be trustworthy yourself. Why have you stayed with the ICIA so long? The people and program in Idaho are outstanding. I feel I have been allowed to be an integral part of the process and make a difference for our industry. I have also been given the latitude to develop personally and professionally by getting involved at all levels of the seed industry. Society of Commercial Seed Technologist Honorary Membership Award (1999). President of AOSCA 1994-95.
