Seed Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 21) Seedsman Profile Floyd Hansmeier President, Hansmeier and Sons, Inc. Bristol, SD • 605-492-3611 • hansson1@midconetwork.com Hometown: Aberdeen, SD. Family: Wife Jill and two daughters. Education: B.S. in Agriculture, South Dakota State University (1968). Years with Hansmeier and Sons: 38. Years in the industry: 38. Best cost-cutting idea: If our route trucks are not full or are under legal weight, we fill them with extra bags of whichever products are in demand at the time. This has saved many extra trips. It also makes our customers happy when they want a few extra bags of lawn mix or alfalfa seed or sudan seed and the driver has what they need right there ready to be unloaded. Your personal key to success: It may sound a bit old-fashioned, but hard work and honesty still top the list. Keys to Hansmeier and Sons success: Diversification in the seed business is very important. When some products are outof-season, others are in demand. This helps provide a more even cash flow and maintain our overall profitability. Meaningful professional experience: In 1974, my father Ralph and I took a trip to the West Coast to look at seed plants. We had time to see many other seed businesses and to talk with some of the most incredible people. After I got home, I knew I wanted to be in the seed business for the long-term. The most enjoyable part of the seed business: Buying alfalfa and grass seed in western South Dakota. It is a great place to be in the Fall. I also enjoy seeing my fellow seedsmen at the Western meeting in Kansas City each year. The least enjoyable part is having to deal with the personnel problems that arise in every business from time to time. Biggest management challenge: Succeeding my dad and taking over the day-to-day management responsibilities of the company. It is a lot different when you are the one holding President Truman’s sign: The Buck Stops Here. Personal hobbies: Reading and collecting biographies of historical military figures. My current read is Profiles in Courage about the Lewis and Clark expeditions to the Pacific Northwest in the 1800s. I also have quite a few books on President Kennedy’s assassination. Awards and professional/civic honors: President, South Dakota Seed Association (1981-82); Board Member, South Dakota Foundation Seed Stocks Division (1990-96); Board Member, South Dakota Crop Improvement Association (1995-2001 and 2006 to present); President, Northern Seed Trade Association (2007-08).
