Seed Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 22) Monsanto’s Confidence Investors told Monsanto has the potential to “rewrite the agricultural landscape” With farm commodity prices at record high levels and a product pipeline containing a stream of new biotech traits, Hugh Grant, Monsanto chairman, CEO and president, was bursting with confidence as his company hosted its third annual field day August 12 for investors at the Monsanto research farm near Monmouth, IL. “There’s no crystal ball in agriculture, but when you walk through these research fields, it’s as close as you come to seeing the future in agriculture,” Grant told the investors. “Within one farm, you see the technologies that already exist and have the potential to rewrite the agricultural landscape next year and 10 years from now planted side-by-side. The centerpiece of this year’s investor event is Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean technology. “We expect Roundup Ready 2 Yield to be delivered on time, as promised and with a step change in yield that’s equivalent to almost a decade’s worth of breeding gains,” Grant says. U.S. Corn Share Going into the 2009 selling season, Grant says Monsanto expects to extend its eight-straight years of corn share gains. Monsanto recently increased its 2009 share expectation for DEKALB to two or more points, up from its previous range of one to two share points. The increase reflects continuing confidence in the ability of its underlying seed and traits to outperform the best competitive alternatives, Grant says. The company reported that American Seeds, Inc. (ASI) brands also gained one to two share points in 2008, establishing ASI’s seed position at 10-11 percent of the total market. Grant expects ASI’s organic growth to continue with a one-share point gain targeted for 2009. For 2009, Monsanto expects triplestack corn acreage will grow to 34 million to 35 million acres. Grant also reiterated Monsanto’s target to grow its share in key international corn geographies by one to two share points in 2009. According to Grant, SmartStax remains on track for commercial launch in 2010 pending appropriate regulatory approvals.
