The Seedanalyser complements the Astec Global Q2 seed analyzer. Both machines give different information about the seed-lot quality. The Seedanalyser is developed for a quick field evaluation of seed maturity based on chlorophyll fluorescence (CF). The non-destructive technique is a very sensitive method for measuring chlorophyll in seeds. Scientifically it has been shown that CF is an effective indicator of seed ripeness as the quantity of chlorophyll decreases during seed maturation. Response No. 333 U.S. Crop Forecast Corn yields overcome late planting deficit Meeting the growing demand for row crop supplies for food and energy production is being achieved thanks in part to innovations in plant biotechnology. In its August 12 corn and soybean crop forecast, the USDA expects U.S. farmers to produce the second largest corn crop and fourth largest soybean crop in history, Soybean production is forecast at 2.97 billion bushels, up 15 percent from last year. Corn yields are expected to average 155 bushels per acre (bpa) , up 3.9 bpa from last year. If realized, this would be the second largest corn yield on record, behind 2004. Sharon Bomer Lauritsen, executive vice president, food and agriculture for the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), Washington, DC, says seed technology deserves some of the credit for the higher corn yield forecast. “Plant biotechnology helps contribute to crop yield increases, allowing farmers to meet the growing demand for food, feed and fuel,” Bomer Lauritsen says. “Currently, 91 percent of soybeans and 73 percent of corn grown in the United States are biotech varieties, which enable these plants to resist insect and weed threats.” In the very near future, Bomer Lauritsen expects that biotechnology will allow crops to survive in drought and other adverse growing conditions.
