Seed Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 34) Expansion for the Majors Producer’s Choice, Grassland Central and Target Seeds Merge Grassland Central, Jordan, MN will become the Midwest base of operations for Producer’s Choice after its merger with Grassland Central and Target Seed, Parma, ID is complete. “This merger makes it possible for the company we started to go to the next level and allow us to focus on our core competency of agricultural production,” says Jon Watson, Producers Choice spokesperson. Producer’s Choice, was launched in 2001 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cal/West Seeds, Woodland, CA. The merger with Grassland Central and Target Seeds is a significant step as Producer’s Choice expands towards becoming a national brand specializing in grass and legume seeds, says Watson. Monsanto Acquires Guatemalan Seed Company Monsanto has acquired Marmot, S.A., which operates Semillas Cristiani Burkard (SCB), a privately-held seed company headquartered in Guatemala City, Guatemala. SCB focuses on hybrid corn seed production and is a provider of corn, sorghum, forage sorghum, soybeans, and pastures seeds. The company operates in 12 countries throughout North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. The company has long-standing rela- tionships with farmers and works with more than 900 dealers in the Central American region. SCB is also a distributor of Seminis vegetable seeds, a product of Monsanto’s vegetable seed division. DuPont Opens Corn Research Center in Mexico DuPont opened its new maize research center in Los Mochis, Mexico in June. Los Mochis is a coastal city in northern Sinaloa on the western side of Mexico. The research center will be the fourth crop genetics research facility Pioneer operates in Mexico. It will focus on developing maize hybrids specifically suited for the northwest and northeast Mexico markets.
