Monsanto Receives Incentives For New Iowa Seed Facility The Iowa Transportation Commission in July awarded a $280,000 grant to Monsanto to help pave a road to its new seed corn conditioning facility to be built near Independence, IA. According to a Monsanto spokesperson, the company plans to spend more than $90 million on the plant that will have 47 employees plus seasonal help at its 150-acre site. Monsanto received tax benefits of up to $7.5 million from the Iowa Department of Economic Development for the project. The new facility is scheduled for completion in 2010. Mycogen Expands Field Stations Mycogen Seeds announced in early August plans for a new breeding station facility near Huron, SD. This station will serve as a temporary facility until a permanent site is built. The new field station will expand grain and silage corn testing and breeding, improve and expand sunflower testing and enable better mini-strip testing for both corn and sunflower. Earlier this summer, Mycogen Seeds announced plans to expand and move its current Mt. Vernon, IN corn breeding field station to a new location. The Mt. Vernon site will provide expanded working and storage space. The new facility is expected to have approximately 7,200 square feet for the office/seed lab building and approximately 8,400 square feet for the equipment storage building. The Mt. Vernon Field Station has three basic breeding programs: conventional grain corn breeding, silage corn breeding, and a germplasm enhancement breeding program. The breeding programs are effectively coupled with a hybrid testing program comprised of 55,000 yield trial plots in 2008. The testing program will continue to expand to 80,000 plots by 2010. The Mt. Vernon Field Station will have approximately six full-time employees plus temporary and seasonal workers. The new facility is expected to be completed by December, 2008.
