Seed Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 36) U.S. ‘08 GM Planted Acres USDA estimates total 2008 biotech acreage increased six percent over 2007 The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service June 30 crop acreage report estimates that farmers planted 87.3 million acres of corn, down seven percent from 2007. Despite the decrease, the 2008 corn planted acreage is the second highest since 1946, behind last year’s total of 93.6 million acres. Growers expect to harvest 78.9 million acres of corn for grain. This represents the second largest corn harvest since 1944, surpassed only by the 2007 harvest. Slowed by rain and cool temperatures, corn planting was 27 percent complete on May 4, down 32 points from normal. Despite intermittent showers and below normal temperatures, producers were able to make rapid progress during May. Farmers reported that 97 percent of their intended corn acreage had been planted at the time of the survey interviews. Soybean planted area for 2008 is estimated at 74.5 million acres, up 17 percent from last year and one percent below the record high 2006 acreage. All wheat planted area is estimated at 63.5 million acres, up five percent from 2007. All cotton plantings for 2008 are estimated at 9.25 million acres, 15 percent below last year and the lowest since 1983. Replanted acres are not counted in the USDA acreage survey. points to 80 percent. Corn stacked traits increased substantially while cotton stacked traits decreased slightly. Herbicide-only traits decreased for both crops. Indiana, Ohio and Missouri had the largest percentage increase in corn biotech-planted acres. Texas is the only state to have a decrease (one percent) in the use of biotech corn seed.
