Seed Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 47) Non-GM Biotech Rice International project seeks disease resistance, improved milling yield One of the missions of the multi-state Rice Coordinated Agricultural Project (RiceCAP) is to develop new varieties through the study of genomics without creating genetically transformed varieties. Unpolished rice Led by the University of Arkansas System’s Division of Agriculture, RiceCAP is funded by a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 2005 was the first full year of the RiceCAP scientific effort. RiceCAP projects are being conducted by 25 principal investigators in 12 states, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in The Philippines and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Columbia. CIAT is one of the 15 centers that make up CGIAR, the Consultive Group on International Agricultural Research. “The RiceCAP project is conducting genomics research to develop new tools for conventional plant breeders,” says Dr. Jim Correll, University of Arkansas professor of plant pathology and RiceCAP Coordinator. Molecular markers being developed by the international project will allow plant breeders to more quickly develop complex non-GM traits. RiceCAP also has an educational and outreach mission with a five-minute video podcast that provides an overview of the project. to sheath blight fungal disease and milling yield. That point is important, because many export customers for Arkansas rice will not accept genetically engineered rice, he says.
