Seed Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 50) Canada Proposes Seeds Regulations Changes The Government of Canada in late June published proposed changes to its Seeds Regulations to establish a more flexible variety registration system. The proposed amendments are based on feedback received during consultations with stakeholders culminating in a 2006-2007 “Proposal to Facilitate the Modernization of the Seed Regulatory Framework” which included changes to the variety registration system. These amendments do not change the current regulatory requirements for safety assessments of new varieties. Other proposed amendments would include administrative amendments to the Seeds Regulations to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the Recommending Committees and to update the language in the Seeds Regulations to meet current drafting standards. Fewer Turfgrass Seed Production Acres Thousands of acres of former turfgrass seed production in the United States and Canada are now growing wheat, corn, canola and other crops according to comments by Steve Tubbs, president, Turf Merchants, Inc., Tangent, OR, at a recent Field Day at Summit Seeds in Manteno, IL. The reduction of turfgrass acres will inevitably result in higher seed prices. Depending upon the species and variety, expect “moderate” increases, say marketers. Tubbs said tens of thousands of acres of perennial ryegrass production have been replaced by other crops. Even so, there shouldn’t be a shortage because the industry still has a sizable carryover. There will be significantly less Ken- tucky bluegrass seed. Reduced acreage resulting in a smaller crop is the primary factor in the price of sod-quality seed going to $4 a pound, Tubbs says. The situation is different for turftype tall fescue where acreage is up due to increased demand. GM Tobacco for Bioremediation Scientists from the University of York and University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom have developed transgenic tobacco that can accumulate and detoxify 1,2-DCA used in the synthesis of vinyl chloride. The scientists inserted two bacterial genes–dhlA and dhlB–into the tobacco genome. The genes encode enzymes that have the ability to detoxify a range of halogenated aliphatics such as 1,2-DCA.
