Seed Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 55) STA Labs Expands Facility adds lab and greenhouse space STA Laboratories’ new laboratory/office facility, Gilroy, CA. STA Laboratories, Inc. moved into its new laboratory, greenhouse and office facility in Gilroy, CA in late April 2008. Darrell Maddox, president of STA Laboratories, says the new facility will allow STA Laboratories to remain in Gilroy. “We look forward to meeting increased client demands and achieving quality-throughput goals with this modern and efficient space.” The added space will allow STA Laboratories to expand its services, process samples more efficiently, add staff and do more bacterial fruit blotch tests in the greenhouses. “We simply didn’t have the room for any more staff in the old facility,” says John Mizicko, general manager of the company’s seed quality services division. He reports that increased requests for additional bacterial fruit blotch tests as well as a significant increase in testing spinach seed for Verticillium wilt and grapevine testing for the vineyard industry in California continue to expand. “We also have more greenhouse space that can be used for other pathology tests as well as six additional plant growth rooms,” Mizicko says. STA Laboratories now has a total of 18,700 sq. ft. of laboratory and office space and over 27,500 sq. ft. of environmentally-controlled greenhouses. The company provides genetic, seed and plant diagnostic services from its locations in Gilroy, CA and Longmont, CO.
