Seed Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 56) Bt Cotton in Burkina Faso Western African nation looks to GM cotton for economic improvements over 14 million inhabitants, Burkina Faso is the third African country after South Africa and Egypt to have approved commercialization of a GM crop. Formerly the Republic of Upper Volta, Burkina Faso is an impoverished, landlocked nation the size of Colorado in West Africa. It is geographically in the Sahel—the agricultural region between the Sahara Desert and the coastal rain forests. Economically, Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is certainly the poorest nation to have commercialized a GM crop. Average per capita gross domestic product (GDP) is less than $1.50 per day. More than 80 percent of its people depend on subsistence agriculture for their livelihood. Millet, sorghum, corn and rice are the main food crops. Cotton is a major cash crop in regions with enough water for production. Initial Seed Multiplication Burkina National Agricultural Research Institute (INERA) and Monsanto have signed a commercial agreement paving way for the importation of Bt cotton seeds to be grown for seed multiplication. Kinyua Mbijjewe, Monsanto Africa spokesperson, says that seeds for 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres) are being planted by Burkinabe farmers. INERA hopes to produce seed for 400,000 hectares (980,000 acres) for planting in 2009. There is widespread optimism that insect-resistant cotton will enable Burkinabe farmers to receive significant economic and agronomic benefits.
