Two new types of rice, developed in cooperation with experts in India, the Philippines and the United States, have passed field tests and have been approved by Bangladesh’s agriculture ministry for use by farmers. The first new rice is flood-tolerant BR11Sub1, named for the Sub1 gene. “This rice can survive up to 15 days under water. It appears to be most suitable for areas that suffer flash floods every year,” says M.A. Salam, research director at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). coastal areas. This new variety could yield an additional 1 million tonnes of rice a year in a country that often faces food shortages. BRRI scientists were also working to develop droughtand cold-resistant varieties of rice, in cooperation with researchers at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines “These are more complicated and progress on those has so far been slow,” Salam says. “But we will succeed ultimately.” “But we Bangladeshis are already consuming American soybean oil for many years without knowing that 60 percent of it is genetically modified,” he adds. Bangladesh does not need to worry about food sufficiency. “The country needs 24 million tonnes of rice annually to feed its population of roughly 150 million,” he added. “But this year production will likely reach nearly 30 million tonnes while our target is to produce 33 million tonnes annually by 2010.” “With the cultivation of Sub1, Saltol and the wider spread of GM rice, Bangladesh will probably never run into food deficit,” Salam says. “Even with less cultivated land, food production will outpace population growth.” GM Food Debate Bangladesh was watching the global debate over GM foods as its own BR29 variety of GM rice awaits testing and government approval, Salam says. Salt tolerance The saline-resistant variety, called Saltol, is to be grown in the country’s Response No. 631 Response No. 632 Third Quarter 2008 63 http://www.teamcssi.com http://www.fumigationzone.com http://www.teamcssi.com
