Seed Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 64) India, Moldova in Seed Schemes OECD rules harmonize international seed sampling, testing and movement Delegates from 55 countries met in Chicago on July 1-2 for the 50th annual meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Seed Schemes. Officially, the gathering is the Annual Meeting of Representatives of the National Designated Authorities for the Implementation of the OECD Schemes for the Varietal Republic of Moldova Certification of Seed Moving in International Trade. The meeting was hosted by the designated United States authority for the OECD seed schemes, the USDA/Agricul▲ tural Marketing Service. Perry Bohn, program manager for the OECD Seed Schemes program in the United States, welcomed the delegates, observers and visitors from 55 nations. USDA Official Meeting Host “It is an honor for the United States to host the 50th annual OECD Seed Schemes meeting,” Bohn says. “OECD seed certificates have become especially important for the United States in 2008 as the quantity of U.S. seed exports—especially turfgrass seed—has increased dramatically.” Merete Buus, Denmark, chaired the meeting. Two countries—India and Republic of Moldova—were both granted eligibly to participate in the OECD Seed Schemes program. Each country’s seed testing and certification programs had been evaluated earlier in 2008. An evaluation team spent time in each country to assure that the programs in place conform to the globally accepted OECD standards. After the admission of India and Moldova, a total of 57 countries are now eligible to issue OECD certificates. Approved countries issue official OECD certificates to accompany seed entering international trade. Most countries and seed importing companies require OECD approved seed testing and quality certificates. In addition to the official USDA/AMS hosts, the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) and the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies (AOSCA) provided support to welcome the international visitors.
