If the desired markers are not present, there is no reason for grow-out and the entire seed is discarded. The immediate effect of the laser screening and AYT is to greatly increase the efficiency and value of field grow-outs. Pioneer’s plant breeders can now know that every plant growing in the field will carry desirable genetics. Breeders now have the option of either greatly reducing the size and expense of field grow-outs or greatly increasing the number of desireable plants that can be evaluated. The plant breeders have chosen the later option. Genetic information gathered from previous years’ work can now be integrated into the current breeding decisions. “The millions of phenotypic points of data Pioneer researchers have collected over the years have made AYT a reality,” Niebur said. “These data points are living within a supercomputer that has decoded much of the genetic code of our industry-leading germplasm. With this broad molecular insight and AYT tools like Laser-Assisted Seed Selection, we are able to breed higher yielding products much faster than ever before.” Painted Seeds In preparation for the laser cutting process, whole ears of corn are spray painted by robotic sprayers. Only the top flat end of the kernels receive a coating of paint. The rest of the kernel is mostly protected by surrounding kernels and remains paint-free. The paint is similar to the magnetic latex paint used to create magnetic surfaces in children’s playrooms. The paint contains iron particles which are attracted to any magnetic object. After the paint dries, the ears are shelled and kernels are placed in a holding plate with a series of open wells. On one side of each well there is a magnetic insert which attracts the painted end of a kernel.
