Most of the activity for WSA members is concentrated in public trading areas and private meeting rooms. These activities continue a tradition that began in the 1890s when western seed producers began meeting with eastern seed distributors. Notwithstanding fax machines and e-mail messages, the personal face-toface continues. It is often said among those involved in the seed business, “We are dealing seed, but this is at its core a people business.” At its annual business meeting, the WSA elected 2008-2009 officers: • President Steve Tubbs, Turf Merchants, Inc., Tangent, OR; • First Vice President Bob O’Donnell, Winfield Solutions, McFarland, WI; • Second Vice President Terry Peters, Seeds, Inc., Tekoa, WA. ASTA Divisions Program The ASTA Divisions program included a variety of speakers with diverse perspectives on the industry. One presenter was Michael Boekholder, head groundskeeper for major league baseball’s 2008 World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies, who described his experience as a sports turf manager. For football fields, Boekholder says he likes the performance of the new cool season bermudagrass varieties. For baseball fields—nothing beats a good bluegrass variety. In his report on credit availability, Jeff Greenlee, president, NBC Bank, Altus, OK, told the group to anticipate underwriting requirements to be followed more closely. Greenlee anticipates little change in the actual cost of credit although fees may increase. Trading area at the Western Seed Association annual meeting, Kansas City.
