Wind Today - Q1 2009 - (Page 25) When Ben Beaver, part owner of Tanners Orchard, outside of Speer, IL (309-493-5442), hosts school children touring his family’s business, he always spends a few minutes talking about the wind turbines they can see from the orchard. “We take the kids through the orchard in a wagon and get to within 200 meters of the nearest wind turbine,” says Beaver. The most common response from the mostly kindergarten to second grade students, he says, is “Wow!” Typical questions visitors ask and Beaver’s responses include: What do they cost? —about $2.5 million per turbine. How big are they? —the blades are 135 feet long and the hubs where the blades connect to the turbines are 265 feet in the air. How much electricity do they generate? —one of ours (1.5 MW) supports 600 homes, so this 100-turbine wind farm can support 6,000 homes. Where does the power go? —The electricity generated here is spread between three to five states. Since there’s no way to store it, the electricity that is generated must be used instantly. Does the noise bother you? —There really isn’t much noise—it’s more of a swish, like water running through a stream. I think it’s soothing. Gro Wind Farm Camp Grove Wind Farm The wind farm nearest to Tanners Orchard is the Camp Grove Wind Farm located near Camp Grove, IL about 20 miles north of Peoria on either side of Highway 40. The 150 megawatt (MW) wind farm was co-developed by Vision Energy LLC, Cincinnati, OH, and Orion Energy Group, LLC (OEG), Oakland, CA. The Camp Grove Wind Farm consists of 100 1.5 MW GE wind turbines that span two counties: 60 wind turbines are in Marshall County and 40 turbines are in Stark County. According to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) 2008 projects listing, the Camp Grove Wind Farm is one of nine wind farms currently operating in Illinois generating 744 MW of wind power. As of November 2008, four additional projects were under construction in Illinois that will add another 372 MW of capacity. Most of the wind farms currently operating or under construction in Illinois are located in the north-central part of the state. AWEA reports that with 6,980 MW of potential wind energy capacity, Illinois ranks eighth in the nation for existing capacity, and 16th for potential capacity.
