Wind Today - Q1 2009 - (Page 77) Industry Profile Years with Company: 2 Years in the Industry: 4 Education: BA with honors, International Relations, Stanford University. Entry into the wind industry: In late 2004, I entered the wind industry as a project developer for Zilkha Renewable Energy in Houston, TX. This was shortly before Goldman Sachs acquired Zilkha. My personal key to success: Never stop learning and building on my expertise, both within wind and in the larger power generation sector. The renewable energy industry is evolving so rapidly that those who continue to evolve with it will realize the greatest impact. My biggest challenge: Integrating the disparate challenges that EER’s clients face into a cohesive vision of how each wind value chain segment can best be leveraged to sustain the industry’s longterm growth. Josh Magee is a regular presenter at AWEA and CanWEA workshops and conferences. “Maximizing wind’s true end-to-end electricity system benefits through effective and efficient utility integration will be one of the next big challenges and opportunities that the North American industry will face. Success in this area through best practices in utility wind integration and forecasting will impact wind’s long-term role within the larger power generation mix.” —Josh Magee sector, but there is a tremendous amount that wind can do while other renewable energy technologies evolve toward cost parity. Key to the growth of the industry: Inter-state transmission planning and construction. This issue receives significant media attention, but few outside of wind project development circles truly understand how few years remain before a lack of substantial interstate transmission capacity could become a major hurdle to new largescale wind growth in several key U.S. states and electricity regions. What I predict for the industry in the next three years: Near-term difficulties in navigating the current economic recession and credit crunch, combined with tremendous longer-term opportunities spurred by policy momentum building in the Obama administration. For those companies that successfully survive the near-term downturn in demand, renewables policy development in the United States and abroad promise to continue to push the global wind industry to new heights of growth. Personal highlights: Working on the development of the Maple Ridge wind farm in upstate New York. The successful operation of Maple Ridge was a milestone for the industry— achieving the installation of a project of that scale in a permitting and siting environment as complex as exists in New York State. With Maple Ridge, PPM Energy and Horizon Wind Energy set the bar for what was possible for the wind industry in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Hobbies: Travel, playing music, skiing, scuba diving. 77 Josh Magee Emerging Energy Research Research Director, Wind Energy Advisory 700 Technology Square Cambridge, MA 02139 617-551-8480 jmagee@emerging-energy.com www.emerging-energy.com I meet that challenge by: Building strong, trusting relationships with EER’s client base. EER’s core value-added stems from our ability to stay ahead of general market trends—not only by constantly building our industry data and intelligence, but also by successfully converting that data into market research that makes a material contribution to the strategic direction of this industry. What I like about the wind industry: Helping to create a viable and costcompetitive industry which is contributing to the struggle against global climate change. Wind will ultimately be just one power generation solution involved in the transition to a carbon-free electricity http://www.emerging-energy.com http://www.emerging-energy.com
